Assignment: You will write a short research paper summarizing and evaluating the scholarly literature on one historical case of an economic crisis. In your paper you should develop a thesis that seeks to answer the following questions: Why is it important to study this crisis? What are the lessons to be learned? Why should we care? What mistakes were made? Is it possible to learn from these mistakes and prevent similar crises in the future? The paper should also address the following issues: 1. What type of economic crisis? 2. What do scholars see as the main causes of the crisis? Are there any disagreements? (If your research is thorough and effective you will likely find scholarly disagreements). 3. What were the economic effects of the crisis? Can you find appropriate data, such as: number of bank failures, unemployment rate, inflation/deflation, lost output, bankruptcies, foreclosures, government debt, defaults, currency devaluation, etc.? 4. How long did the crisis last? How was it resolved? Were policy responses effective or did they contribute to the crisis? 5. Was there any political fallout? Electoral changes, revolutions, new political movements? 6. Where there international causes and effects? Contagion? Bibliographical sources: A. Traditional scholarly sources—books, chapters of books, peer-reviewed journal articles— should make up the core of your research. (minimum 4 sources from this category). B. Acceptable scholarly internet sources may include published research from academic institutions or think tanks, such as Brookings Institution or Jerome Levy Institute. C. Newspaper articles and periodicals (such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist) are acceptable sources in most cases. D. Primary sources are first-hand accounts from the time period under investigation. Examples of primary sources are newspaper articles, diaries, letters, interviews, documents, or data collected during the time period. E. Unacceptable sources include blogs, unaffiliated websites, Wikipedia, most encyclopedias, and YouTube rants. Style and format: All papers must use APA citation style. Paper length is 1,800 to 2,400 words (excluding title page and bibliography) Papers must include a title page and page numbers.
