WEEK 3 SURVEY DECISION

This week we will be covering the use of surveys in collecting data in criminal justice research. We will quickly learn that many different things can influence the results of a survey- from the wording of questions, the comfort participants have in telling the truth, and the way in which the survey is administered. When reviewing the text and the supplemental resources provided try to keep this thought in mind- if our goal in doing research is to investigate the relationship between different variables- and if our data is influenced by many other factors as discussed, then we need to take make sure we are assessing the quality of our survey construction as we evaluate the data our surveys provide. 

This week we will submit our research question for our proposals. By now we should see that have a specific, easily defined and measurable research question is the first step toward successfully crafting a research proposal. It will help to use the reference sheet from last week to try to hone in on a specific question. Your instructor will be able to help you determine if your question is specific and measurable enough to proceed, so please don’t hesitate to seek feedback or guidance as you craft your potential research question this week. 
Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the week, students will know and be able to:
Identify and discuss the various types of sampling designs, survey research, survey construction and observational research.
Analyze and discuss the various methods of collecting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting research results.
Examine studies that make use of these research methods including national crime surveys, sampling of police officer attitudes on a subject, and observation of detention subjects.
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the UCR, NIBR, NCVS, victim surveys and self-report surveys.
Use multiple data sources.
Review the process of direct observation.
Review the process of examining written records.
Compare the processes involved in qualitative, quantitative, and experimental research.
